Spring is about rebirth and new growth, so I thought now would be a wonderful time to revisit our intentions or set new ones. First, lets spend some time understanding what an intention is, how it differs from a goal and how it can change your life. Sounds good, right?
The easiest way to differentiate a goal from an intention is to understand that a goal is about the FUTURE and an intention is about the NOW.
A goal is really just an imagined future scenario that seems desirable to us. It often comes with plans for hard work, self-discipline and achievement schedules. While goal setting can be great for organizing and prioritizing things in your life, you may notice that whether or not you achieve your goals, you’re not completely fulfilled. As soon as you begin to notice more negative self-talk than positive, more deprivation than joy, more hostility than excitement, you might want to consider an alternative and put a foot on the path to self-discovery through intention setting.
An intention is a manifestation from a deep place of self-knowledge and guides us in each present moment. That is why we often set intentions after periods of silence or meditation. To set an intention that will bring your fullest life, you must first truly know your inner self. And here’s the best part… when you set an intention, you let go of all thoughts of the future. You basically allow life to unfold and see where it takes you, knowing that you are guided by your deepest desires and values. FUN, right?
So, the next time you consider setting a goal to lose 5 lbs, watch less TV, or eat better you might FIRST take a few minutes of silence and begin to ask for an intention. Who knows what your true potential might be! So, I invite you to take a step onto your path in this world and set an intention for your Spring. I can’t wait to see where it takes you!
